Protecting the vine-plants before winter
Three main steps are taken to protect the vine-plants before winter. Spreading organic manure on the land, earthing up the foot of the plants to guard against frost, and replacing the dead vine-plants. The vine-growers of Haut-Brion analyze the different organic components missing in the plants. The tractors then spread organic manure on the parcels that require it. To protect the plants from frost damage, the vine-grower puts a hillock of soil around the plant base. This technique causes most of the rain water to run off between the rows. |

When scattered plants are dead on a specific parcel, they are individually replaced. This situation does not require the vine-grower to replant the entire plot. |
