For years, the old chais with vat room and barrels remained the same. They were attached to and even communicated with the château. In 1991, several new buildings were added that combined to create a large new courtyard. It gives into the smaller area where formerly the vat room faced the offices.

Today part of the old chais has been renovated and converted to house the first-year barrels. The classic chai has sturdy pillars holding up its beautiful wood-beamed ceiling.

The barrels made in the cooperage are lined up in the chais, raised up just off the ground to allow the wood to breathe.

Construction of a much needed beautiful underground cellar was completed in 1974. It replaced Haut-Brion's old cellars inconveniently situated in Bordeaux on the Quai des Chartrons.
